  1. I got mine in the complete starter kit. Mr. Distiller is a Still Spirits Air Still and is perfect for someone just getting into the hobby or an experienced distiller who wants to run a small batch, perhaps to test a recipe. Very convenient to use, no mess, no hoses, and a breeze to clean afterwards. I enthusiastically give Mr. Distiller five stars. You can do a lot with this little still and get extremely tasty shine the like of which is not available in liquor stores. . . . If you haven’t decided yet though, there are a few limitations you should consider: 1) the capacity is just one gallon of wash/mash; 2) there are no switches, knobs, bells, or whistles–you just plug it in to turn it on and unplug it to turn it off; 3) despite what you might read, it takes an hour for any distillate to start dripping; and 4) there is no way to control or monitor the temperature. . . . The cuts are easy to make though. Discard the first 2 fl. oz. as foreshots/heads, and after that measure the ABV of the distillate every 5 or 6 fl. oz., noting when the ABV starts dropping faster. You’ll also notice that the flow of distillate slows, and of course, you’ll be able to smell the difference. Using these indicators, you can determine when the distillate of the first run is getting tails-heavy. I collect these tails-heavy “seconds” from several first runs and then run the “seconds”, making another cut for the tails out of the distillation of “seconds”. (The heads are already taken out in the first run.) . . . I bought a gin basket for it from Mile Hi, but instead of making gin with it, I bought some copper saddles from Mile Hi and put them in the gin basket to adsorb sulfides.

  2. UPDATE! I love this little still, it’s the best hands down. I’m in the middle of a run as I’m writing this. The first batch was a straight up sugar shine that did not ferment out dry and it was fantastic. Combined with using a zero water filter pitcher, it was the smoothest shine I ever had. Next up I made a light cranberry vodka using a cranberrry vodka essence that I got from Mile High and it was so popular, I ended up having to make more of it. The highest I ever got was 160 proof which I used DADY Distillers yeast and the wash was at 22% ABV. This little still makes just enough to fill one 750 ML bottle after diluting it down to my desired ABV. I have since switched to Lavlin EC1118 champagne yeast which is more consistent and I usually get a wash that’s around 18% ABV using 6 pounds of sugar in a 2 gallon fermentor.

  3. Easy as using a Kuerig coffee maker. Out of the 3 stills that I have, this one is my favorite hands down. It’s so easy to operate and it takes about 2.5 hours to complete 1 run. Out of a 2 gallon batch, you will usually end up with a little over a half gallon at 110 proof using turbo yeast. Remember to throw out the first 30 ML’s (1 US Fluid Ounce) before collecting your quart. Once you dilute it down to 80 proof (40% ABV), you will end up with 3/4’s of a gallon give or take a little. It depends on how strong your wash is. I definitely recommend getting the collection and filtering system.
