Baby Step Bourbon Recipe Kit.
Baby step bourbon recipe kit designed for beginner bourbon makers. Includes everything you need to make your own whiskey and age using oak chips. This recipe kit has ingredients to make a 6.5 gallon mash of bourbon.
Includes:
- 7 lbs. Flaked maize
- 1 lbs. Flaked Rye
- 1 lb. smoked wheat
- 2 lbs. malted barley, milled
- 1 tsp. gypsum (sold separately, optional) Gypsum (Calcium Sulphate) – 1 LB.
- 1 tsp. Acid blend (sold separately, optional) Acid Blend 1lb
- 5 gallons water (not provided)
- Yeast
- Charred oak chips
- 8 LB. Sugar (optional for higher ABV, not included)
Stock pot Method:
In a large stockpot mix water, and add gypsum or acid blend if needed. Measure pH and make sure it is within range. Optimal range should between 5 and 7. If pH is too high, add a tsp. of gypsum. If pH is too low, add a teaspoon of acid blend. Cover pot and heat until 165°F. Turn off heat and add grain mixture. Stir five minutes to ensure even distribution until mixture is thinned out and easy to stir. Let mash cool to 149°F, cover, and allow mash to rest 90 minutes stirring occasionally. Cool mash further to 75°F (or optimal temperature for your specific yeast) and add yeast. Allow to ferment for 5-7 days. Distill then age using oak chips or a barrel until you have reached your desired flavor and color.
Boiling Water Method:
In a large stockpot boil 5 gallons of water. Pour grain mixture into fermentation bucket lined or unlined. Take boiling water and pour over grain mixture. Put lid on fermenter with boiling water and let sit for two hours. Remove lid and stir solution until thinned. Let cool naturally or cold crash with ice until mash is at optimal temperature for yeast (around 75 degrees Fahrenheit). Pitch yeast over the grains, put on lid and let sit for 5-7 days. Distill then age using oak chips or a barrel until you have reached your desired flavor and color.
